Flash is not always necessary. in class we learned that the sun can create tons of lighting that's beneficial for taking a picture, but it can also create back lit situations. in that case if your flash is not turned on, on your camera, if your first shot comes out dark the fill in flash will lighten up the subject that came out dark. it will also make the shadows disappear.
